Born in Uganda, African native Warren Kilonzo grew up in Malawi before moving to California in 1997, to reconnect with extended family. There, he continued his education, completing courses in psychology at Loma Linda University. Eventually, the prospect of thriving job opportunities; long, bleak winters; and even more extended family lured Warren to New England. He worked at Life Links while he completed his Associate Degree in Psychology at Quincy College. In 2020, his career pathway led him to Tewksbury as a Seven Hills Community Services direct support professional (DSP). When he was not working, Warren began caring for his ill mother, now living in Fitchburg, and the one-time world traveler’s commute began taking its toll. Fortunately, Warren was able to fill a DSP position that became available in a medically intensive home in Fitchburg. His impact in this home earned Warren his Seven Hills Champ nomination, which stated, “he has gone above and beyond for the people he supports, his supervisor, and his teammates. He is selfless and will stay extra hours if needed. He has offered his knowledge and time. His positive attitude has helped to usher in positive changes and a more positive culture.” Warren humbly credits his knowledge of psychology and the many disciplines it takes to keep harmony in a household. “The ability to see both sides of the coin and agreeing to disagree,” are Warren’s words of wisdom. He is a caregiver at heart, whose day is most satisfying when the residents are safe and comfortable. To reflect on Warren’s journey, one could note the ever-present strength of the African sun that warms his presence and lights his path wherever he goes.
