Finding Peace of Mind—and Joy—on the Mountain

Joey's Journey at Crotched Mountain School

When Angie and Rocco first explored the idea of sending their son, Joey, to a residential school, it was a decision fraught with emotions. At the time, Joey was a 19-year-old non-verbal young man with unique needs. The thought of him living away from their New York home seemed daunting. However, their search for a program that could support Joey in reaching his full potential led to the top of a New Hampshire mountain— and to a new chapter in their family’s journey. 

Located in Greenfield, NH, Crotched Mountain School (CMS) is a residential and education program for children and young adults who are on the autism spectrum, and/or have disabilities and other life challenges. 

From their first interaction with the CMS admissions team, Angie and Rocco felt a sense of hope. "The staff’s focus on building independent vocational skills aligned perfectly with our vision for Joey’s future. We wanted a meaningful life for him—friends, communication skills, and the ability to work someday." 

Joey has blossomed since his enrollment. Trust in staff has allowed him to progress in communication and daily living skills. Using TouchChat, a specialized app, Joey can share his thoughts and emotions through FaceTime chats with his family. For Angie and Rocco, hearing Joey say, “I feel happy” to his sister, Abby, was a moment they’ll never forget.

Joey’s days are filled with activities that tap into his adventurous spirit. The adaptive hiking trails, kayaking on the mountain lake, and recreational therapy in the campus garden have become his favorites. The impact of structured programs, like the New Hampshire Special Olympics, foster Joey’s sense of belonging and teamwork.

The couple’s decision to enroll Joey at Crotched Mountain School has been bittersweet. "The separation is never easy, but knowing he’s safe, supported, and thriving gives us peace of mind." —Angie

Weekly updates from Joey’s caregivers and meaningful dialogue ensure that Angie and Rocco remain active participants in Joey’s personal journey.
