Seven Hills Behavioral Health Opens New S.T.E.P. and T.W.I.S.T. Programs in Fall River
On Friday, October 12th, a ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official opening of two valuable resources in the Fall River community. The S.T.E.P. program focuses on HIV prevention and education among active, intravenous drug-using men and women who are at increased risk of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, while T.W.I.S.T. is an HIV prevention and education program for gay, bisexual, and questioning men. Both programs grew from the success of H.O.M.E. of H.O.P.E. which serves women in New Bedford. The programs' director, Maria Alves, said, "The goal of these programs is to help people with drug problems and other issues such as HIV and sexually transmitted diseases."
The event was attended by State Representatives David Sullivan and Robert Correia, Barry Callis from the Department of Public Health, and clients and other community members. Mayor Edward M. Lambert and Dr. David Jordan recognized the tremendous efforts of all those involved with the programs. “I want to recognize not only Connie (Mimosa) and Maria (Alves), but all the staff that do hard work every day. We are humbled by your success,” stated Dr. Jordan. Mayor Lambert also echoed Dr. Jordan’s sentiment declaring, “If human service programs are to be effective, it requires people with courage to participate in those programs. We appreciate Seven Hills’ presence in Fall River.”
These new programs are part of Seven Hills Behavioral Health whose mission is to increase access and remove barriers to health, education, and social services by providing direct services, advocacy, and leadership to the population of people facing life challenges throughout Massachusetts. The H.O.M.E. of H.O.P.E. which developed these two programs, offers a variety of other services including substance abuse counseling, mental health counseling, domestic violence/sexual assault counseling, HIV/AIDS/STD education and prevention, HIV/AIDS/STD counseling and testing, STD clinic referrals, and HIV/AIDS/STD awareness classes.
