Children's Aid & Family Service History 1876 – Founded as the Fitchburg Benevolent Union whose mission was to give constructive help to individuals and families; to help others to help themselves. 1891 – Fitchburg Benevolent Union became Associated Charities which worked to relieve poverty, dependency, and other family challenges. 1897 – Moved to 47 Holt Street in Fitchburg. 1909 – Susan Cushing Dickinson, daughter of Joseph Cushing, donated her former home at 47 Holt Street to Associated Charities for the care and protection of needy children. 1921 – Associated Charities became the Family Welfare Association of Fitchburg which offered constructive help to dependent persons looking toward rehabilitation, and provided personal counseling along with financial assistance. 1946 – The name Family Welfare Association of Fitchburg was changed to Family Service of Fitchburg that provided personal counseling, financial assistance, Traveler’s Aid, and Assistance in using other community services. 1954 – The current name, Children’s Aid & Family Service was selected after the merger of Family Service of Fitchburg with Wachusett Children’s Aid Society.
