Divorce Mediation

Divorce Mediation Services exist to meet the unique needs of couples and families who are in the process of separation and divorce. Parents and researchers report that the most difficult problems for children arise when families go through a conflicted divorce process.

The primary purposes of our program are to:

  • Minimize the negative effects of the separation and divorce experience on parents and children
  • Reduce the conflict that is frequently a part of separation and divorce
  • Assist the parties in reaching a fair and equitable settlement of property and resolving custody and support issues, if applicable
  • Promote post-divorce cooperation where there are children

Mediation is a voluntary process that can be used in any dispute where parties can commit to working together with a neutral third party to create their own solutions.

At Children's Aid & Family Service, we provide Divorce Mediation for:

  • Couples who have made a decision to divorce
  • Couples who are unsure whether to divorce, but who want a separation
  • Couples who have post-decree disputes regarding visitation and parenting plans, child support, step-parenting issues, etc.

Our emphasis is on assisting parents in applying conflict-resolution techniques to ease the level of tension and allow for effective co-parenting. With the assistance of a trained neutral mediator, the couple works to identify, negotiate, and resolve, in a fair way, the issues raised by the decision to divorce. The mediator does not represent either party.

The number of sessions is based on the complexity of the issues involved and the readiness of the couple to engage in negotiations.

We advise each party to consult with an attorney or other relevant professionals, such as an accountant, at any point in the mediation, and especially prior to signing any agreement.

The role of the mediator is to listen carefully, making sure each party has their say and is heard by the other. We provide the "process" and structure of mediation; the parties are in control of the decisions.
