Ghana Partnership

Ghana presently faces significant development challenges such as poverty and hunger, rendering disability support service infrastructure a comparatively low national priority. Historically in Ghana, the birth of a disabled child is stigmatized as a curse, thought to be a punishment for an ancestor’s past wrongdoings. Because of these circumstances, those with developmental disabilities in Ghana struggle to find quality care, education, livelihoods, and most of all, dignity.
SHGO’s partner in Ghana is the New Horizon Special School located in Osu, Accra, Ghana. NHSS provides day school education for children and vocational training and employment for adults with developmental disabilities. NHSS is founded and run by Mrs. Francois, an incredible woman who has dedicated her life’s work to ensuring that children and adults with developmental disabilities have access to opportunity through holistic education. When the school was founded in 1972, very few in Ghana were working on behalf of the developmentally disabled; today, this work remains a rarity, with NHSS providing an incredible service to its clients. The school has a capacity of 200 pupils, with students ages four to fifty years old currently enrolled.
