Bangledesh Partnership
In Bangladesh, poverty, vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters, political stability and economic hurdles present major development complexities. However, Bangladesh is also home to Grameen Bank, a microlending institution. The concept of microcredit lends a creative approach to poverty-reduction and self-sufficiency by granting small loans to the poor, who would not qualify for traditional bank loans. Thanks to this innovative alternative system, SHGO’s focus in Bangladesh is on economic development.

SHGO’s first partnership in this region of the world is with RUSTIC a social entrepreneurial organization operating in the southwest region of Khulna. The executive director of RUSTIC, Moral Noor Mohammad, is an esteemed Ashoka Fellow who has been honored internationally for his contribution to social entrepreneurship. SHGO works with RUSTIC to support three main initiatives: (1) the construction of a well to provide hundreds of villagers access to clean water; (2) the building of a primary school in a slum area which suffers low literacy and school enrollment rates; and (3) the funding of a teacher position for one year at another slum school in the area. These initiatives are enacted with the ultimate goal of boosting economic development in this developing nation.
